Information overload


During the past 15 years, the number of different Enterprise back-end IT systems has raised by an order of magnitude, the adoption of the PC as an essential work tool became nearly ubiquitous and the employees use of business applications, production of documents and email messages increased dramatically.

TNP ProductsParadoxically, while enhancing our capability to conduct day to day management, process figures and stock information, IT has made it increasingly difficult for us to extract knowledge out of the huge amounts of stored information and across the variety of systems connected to the network. With each new piece of information added, the employee's ability to find, share and use the knowledge contained in it and within the whole underlying IT system has been constantly diminishing.

According to industry experts, as many as one out of five pieces of information is lost within the typical enterprise and employees spend 50% of their active time looking for information, so only half of their time goes really to create value for the Enterprise.

Hard-to-find and missing information is causing chaos within the enterprise: Time is wasted, opportunities are missed and value is lost. It is estimated that enterprises will lose more than $92.5 billion by 2008 due to knowledge management inefficiencies.

Information Technology versus Knowledge Technology

The main problematic behind Knowledge Management inefficiencies lies in the inability of IT alone to cover all the needs of managing the information that it generates by itself. The main focus of IT has been traditionally to resolve a specific enterprise set of problems and to provide the vertical functionality to input, process and provide results. While almost all of the systems provide data storage and archiving functionality, none of them provides the means to consolidate all the stored information across multiple exercise periods and platforms.

This has resulted in having multiple windows of access to enterprise knowledge, each providing a narrow view over these valuable assets. While the IT systems perform as excellent number crunchers and data storage systems they are unable to extract information quickly and transform it into Knowledge. Only people have been so far, the reliable tool for performing this task. Quite often, collaborators need to query many IT systems and relate the information retrieved it in their mind to gain the knowledge of the subject they are seeking.

Our knowledge platform provides a means to consolidate information and create corporate knowledge by performing essential Knowledge processing operations behind the scenes. Using artificial intelligence and other techniques, our systems imitate closely the human "Knowledge Construction" patterns and thus provide an intermediate interface between the collaborators and the IT back-end by pushing the barriers of Information Technology towards Knowledge discovery and extraction.
